Multiplication

Repeated addition, mastered at speed

Multiplication is repeated addition — 4 × 3 means adding 4 three times. It is the backbone of mental math, and knowing your times tables cold is the single biggest advantage in speed arithmetic and competitive math.

Key Concepts

Times Tables

Memorizing the products of 1–12 (or 1–20) is the foundation. Each table is a set of facts that should be instantly recallable.

Distributive Property

a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c. For 7 × 13, compute 7 × 10 + 7 × 3 = 70 + 21 = 91.

Multiplying by Powers of 10

Add zeros for 10, 100, 1000. 5 × 100 = 500. This extends to decimals: 5 × 0.1 = 0.5.

Doubling and Halving

To multiply by 4, double twice. By 8, double thrice. By 5, multiply by 10 and halve. By 6, multiply by 3 then double.
