Integral: Power Rule

Formula
∫xⁿ dx = xⁿ⁺¹/(n+1) + C (n ≠ −1)

What is Integral: Power Rule?

The power rule for integration is the reverse of the power rule for derivatives. Add 1 to the exponent, then divide by the new exponent. Add the constant of integration C.

Variables

  • x
    x — Variable of integration
  • n
    n — Exponent (cannot be −1)
  • C
    C — Constant of integration

Worked Examples

Example 1

Find ∫x⁴ dx.

Solution:

∫x⁴ dx = x⁵/5 + C

Example 2

Find ∫(3x² + 2x + 1) dx.

Solution:

= x³ + x² + x + C
