Derivative: Quotient Rule

Formula
(f/g)' = (f'g − fg') / g²

What is Derivative: Quotient Rule?

The quotient rule is used to differentiate the quotient of two functions. The derivative of f divided by g equals f-prime times g minus f times g-prime, all over g squared.

Variables

  • f
    f — Numerator function
  • g
    g — Denominator function
  • f
    f' — Derivative of f
  • g
    g' — Derivative of g

Worked Examples

Example 1

Find the derivative of (3x) / (x² + 1).

Solution:

f = 3x, g = x² + 1. (f/g)' = (3·(x²+1) − 3x·2x) / (x²+1)² = (3x² + 3 − 6x²) / (x²+1)² = (3 − 3x²) / (x²+1)²
