How to Calculate Percentages Faster

Learn practical techniques to calculate percentages mentally. Master percentage shortcuts for common values like 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%.

Percentage calculations appear everywhere — in shopping, finance, statistics, and competitive exams. Being able to compute them quickly in your head is a valuable skill. Here are the most useful techniques.

The 10% trick

To find 10% of any number, simply move the decimal point one place to the left. 10% of 450 is 45. 10% of 80 is 8. This is the foundation for most other percentage calculations.

The 1% trick

Move the decimal two places left. 1% of 600 is 6. 1% of 2500 is 25. Once you know 1%, you can multiply it to get any percentage.

Common percentages from 10%

20%: double the 10% value. 20% of 80 = 8 × 2 = 16. 30%: triple the 10% value. 30% of 80 = 8 × 3 = 24. 5%: halve the 10% value. 5% of 80 = 8 / 2 = 4. 15%: add 10% and 5%. 15% of 80 = 8 + 4 = 12.

The 25% shortcut

25% is the same as dividing by 4. 25% of 120 = 120 / 4 = 30. This works because 25/100 simplifies to 1/4.

The 50% shortcut

50% is simply dividing by 2. 50% of 340 = 170. This is one of the easiest percentages to calculate.

Percentage change

To calculate percentage change, use the formula: ((New − Original) / Original) × 100. For example, if a price goes from $80 to $100: ((100 − 80) / 80) × 100 = 25% increase.

Finding 100% from a percentage

If 30% of a number is 90, what is the number? Divide the partial value by the percentage (as a decimal): 90 / 0.30 = 300.

Percentage increase and decrease together

If a value increases by 20% and then decreases by 20%, it does not return to the original. 100 → 120 → 96. The net change is a 4% decrease. This is a common exam trick.
