How to Memorize Math Formulas Effectively
Proven techniques for memorizing math formulas — from spaced repetition to visual mnemonics. Keep formulas in long-term memory for exams.
Memorizing formulas is a key part of math exam preparation. But rote repetition is inefficient — proven memory techniques make the process faster and more durable.
1. Understand before memorizing
Never memorize a formula you do not understand. If you know why the formula works, you can often re-derive it if you forget. Understanding also makes the formula meaningful, which makes it stick.
2. Use spaced repetition
Review each formula at increasing intervals: after 1 hour, 1 day, 3 days, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month. This leverages the spacing effect, which moves information into long-term memory far more efficiently than cramming.
3. Write them out repeatedly
The physical act of writing strengthens memory. Write each formula 5–10 times, saying it aloud as you write. Engage multiple senses — visual, auditory, and kinesthetic — for stronger recall.
4. Create a formula sheet
Write all formulas on a single page, organized by topic. Even if the exam does not allow formula sheets, the act of creating one is a powerful study exercise. Review it daily in the week before the exam.
5. Use mnemonics
SOH CAH TOA for trigonometry. PEMDAS for order of operations. FOIL for multiplying binomials. Mnemonics give your brain a hook to hang the formula on, making recall faster and more reliable.
6. Practice with the formulas
Do not just memorize — use them. Solve 5–10 problems with each formula. Application cements the formula in memory and teaches you when to use it, not just what it is.
7. Group related formulas
Study formulas in clusters: all area formulas together, all volume formulas together, all trig identities together. Seeing the relationships between formulas makes each one easier to remember.
8. Test yourself
Cover the formula and try to write it from memory. If you get it wrong, review and try again in an hour. Active recall is far more effective than passive re-reading.
